Introduction
Malformations of cortical development (MCD) are a group of disorders characterized by abnormal formation and organization of the cerebral cortex. These malformations can lead to a variety of neurological problems, including epilepsy, which is often resistant to conventional treatments. This class aims to provide an overview of the role of electroencephalography (EEG) in diagnosing and managing epilepsy associated with MCD.
EEG is a crucial tool in diagnosing epilepsy, particularly in cases associated with MCD. EEG helps in:
- Identifying Epileptic Activity: EEG can detect abnormal electrical activity in the brain, allowing for the identification of seizure patterns and localization of epileptic foci.
- Guiding Treatment Decisions: By pinpointing the areas of the brain affected by epileptic activity, EEG aids in tailoring treatment plans, which may include medication, and potentially surgery.
- Monitoring Disease Progression: Regular EEG assessments help in monitoring the progression of epilepsy and adjusting treatment strategies as needed.
Epilepsy in malformations of cortical development presents unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. EEG plays an essential role in understanding the nature of epileptic activity and guiding effective treatment strategies. A thorough grasp of EEG techniques and their application to MCD-related epilepsy is paramount for healthcare professionals working with this complex patient population.
